Prakash Raj unfiltered: A call to action on censorship, creativity, politics and artistic rebellion

In a candid conversation with The Lallantop, actor Prakash Raj shared compelling insights on the influence of politics on cinema in India. The interview covered a wide spectrum of topics, from his cinematic journey and political views to his unapologetic stance on the audience’s freedom.

Politics in movies

Known for his bold opinions, Raj highlighted the growing fear among actors on expressing political views openly.

“Many in the industry are afraid to speak up,” he said. “They worry it might cost them their career.”

Drawing from personal experience, he says that his confidence stemmed from his long-standing popularity and loyal fan base in the South Indian film industry. He also mentioned that fear and financial dependency often silence opposition.

“Half the industry is sold, and the other half is scared.”

Despite this, he refuses to be silenced, insisting that artists have a responsibility to challenge injustices and stand up for what they think is right.

“When history is written, it will forgive those who committed crimes, but never those who were silent,” he warns, admitting that younger actors do not really voice out such issues, but still notice them better now. He acknowledged that it wasn't easy, especially when youngsters and public figures faced tangible dangers for taking a stand.

Censorship in movies

When Raj was asked about the recently released web series 'Adolescence', he expressed deep concern over the growing suppression of creative voices.

“Certain films are not even allowed to be made in India,” he stated, relating to the banning of 'Abir Gulaal' and the backlash faced by movies like 'Empuraan' and 'Padmaavat'.

Raj strongly believed that censorship shouldn’t be supported and that audiences ought to be given the right to watch, think, and decide as they pleased. He encourages artistic freedom, urging that films should not be silenced before they reach the public.

Politics shapes our lives—it’s essential in today’s world, he remarks, adding that misinformation often distracts young people from more critical issues. However, he remains hopeful, believing that the youth will find their voice and rise to the challenge.

A note of hope

The interview goes on with Prakash Raj voicing his opinions on various topics like language imposition in Southern states, meme culture, his dynamics with political figures, and his upcoming book, amongst others.

As he continues to stand tall against censorship and political pressure, his words ignite a sense of responsibility, as an actor and moreover as a citizen of the country.

This interview serves as a powerful reminder of the role actors play in shaping public opinion. Unafraid to challenge the status quo, he calls for a progressive cinema that doesn’t just entertain, but provokes audiences to think differently.
