Rekha inaugurates modern substation at Manglapuri
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday inaugurated the 66/11 kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Manglapuri, calling it a significant milestone in the Capital’s transition toward a more reliable, efficient and sustainable power infrastructure.
Built by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), the fully automated, remotely operated substation is designed to serve around 25,000 households, benefiting more than 1.5 lakh residents, especially in and around the Palam area.
Accompanied by Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood, local MLA Kuldeep Solanki and other dignitaries, the Chief Minister emphasised that the substation marks a step forward in the government’s goal to make Delhi a green energy Capital.
“This modern facility will help ensure 24×7 uninterrupted power supply while supporting our larger objective of promoting solar energy and building smart grids for a greener, more efficient future,” she said.
Highlighting the technology, CM Gupta noted that the GIS-based design allows 35 per cent reduction in land usage compared to traditional systems, making it ideal for densely populated urban zones. Spread over 1,170 sq m, the G+2 structure is equipped to be remotely managed from BRPL’s central control room, ensuring higher safety and operational efficiency.
The Chief Minister further announced that the Delhi Government has allocated Rs 100 crore for converting overhead power lines to underground cables, starting with identified areas and expanding citywide in a phased manner.
“This not only enhances safety but also improves urban aesthetics. Our mission is to create a smart, safe and self-sufficient power system for Delhi,” she said.
Taking a dig at previous governments, Gupta contrasted her administration’s proactive work with past instances of frequent outages and political blame games.
“Earlier, Delhi faced over two lakh power cuts lasting more than an hour. Today, we’ve not only resolved such issues but also carried forward and expanded welfare schemes like free electricity, disproving claims made by past leaders,” she said.
Power Minister Ashish Sood said the new GIS substation was more than just infrastructure. It symbolises the government’s commitment to progressive governance and improving quality of life. “This grid will eliminate problems such as voltage fluctuations and power tripping. It is a strong step towards making Delhi the power capital of India,” he said.
