Sowing dreams: A tech graduate, Mandi youth finds success in floriculture

In an inspiring shift from the tech world to agriculture, Bhag Singh, a youth from Charkha village in Gohar subdivision of Mandi district, has embraced floriculture and turned it into a profitable venture.

An IT graduate, he initially worked in the IT sector but soon realised his passion lay in farming. Concerned by the unreliable returns of traditional agriculture due to erratic weather, he explored more sustainable options and found guidance from the Horticulture Department.

With training from Palampur Agriculture University, Bhag Singh launched his floriculture journey in 2020 by setting up three polyhouses under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) and Himachal Pushp Kranti Yojana. Starting with Carnation flowers, he received encouraging returns, particularly from Delhi markets. His success motivated him to expand operations in the following years.

Currently, he cultivates high-demand flowers like Carnation, Spray Carnation, Stoma, and Gypsophila over 1,700 square metres of land. His investment of around Rs 20 lakh in infrastructure—including drip irrigation, plantation, and support systems—was largely offset by government subsidies of Rs. 15–16 lakh.

Bhag Singh now earns an impressive annual income of Rs 10–12 lakh, showcasing how modern floriculture can be both profitable and sustainable. He praised government schemes for not just providing financial aid, but also inspiring innovation among young farmers.

The Himachal Pushp Kranti Yojana and MIDH have gained popularity in Gohar block, with 66 farmers now practicing polyhouse-based flower farming. Since 2022, nearly Rs. 60 lakh in subsidies has been disbursed. These schemes offer up to 85% subsidy on polyhouses, 80% on drip irrigation under PM Krishi Yojana, and 25% transport fare relief. Solar fencing ensures protection from stray animals.

Bhag Singh’s journey is a testament to how educated youth, when equipped with the right training and support, can transform agriculture into a modern and rewarding enterprise.
