Reliance retracts trademark application for phrase 'Operation Sindoor'

Jio Studios, a film studio belonging to Reliance Industries, has retracted a trademark application for the phrase 'Operation Sindoor', claiming that it had been filed in error by a junior staff member, who had not even received proper authorisation to do so.
The company further clarified that they had no intention of doing so, as it was now “a part of the national consciousness as an evocative symbol of Indian bravery”.
This clarification comes a day after the trademark request had been filed with the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks under Class 41 of the Nice Classification, seeking to use the phrase for entertainment-related services like audio and video content, as per a PTI report.
Often used by OTT platforms, production houses, broadcasters, and event companies, a successful filing under Class 41 might have led to 'Operation Sindoor' becoming a title for a film, web series or documentary.
