Delhi Speaker honours nurses for heroic service during Covid-19 pandemic
Ahead of the International Nurses Day celebrated on May 12 worldwide, Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta honoured the unwavering dedication of nursing staff, particularly their exceptional service during the Covid-19 pandemic. Speaking at a special event organised by the Nurses Association of Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital on Thursday, Gupta praised nurses as the embodiment of compassion, sacrifice, and selfless care.
“When someone in pain calls a nurse ‘Sister’, it’s not just a word—it reflects the deep emotional bond and trust they inspire,” he said, adding that nurses’ values are ones society should strive to emulate. The event saw the presence of Rohtas Nagar MLA Shri Jitender Mahajan as Special Guest and GTB Hospital Medical Director Prof. (Dr.) Vinod Kumar as Guest of Honour.
Recalling the challenges of the pandemic, Gupta said the nursing community stood at the frontlines when the world came to a standstill. “Their courage saved lives and their sacrifices were nationally recognised, including by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he noted.
Gupta also acknowledged how nurses have become indispensable in many households, caring for the vulnerable with empathy that goes beyond professional duty. “Their service is a reflection of the highest human values,” he said.
Recognising the crucial role of GTB Hospital, Gupta lauded its expanding services and urged hospital staff to share any concerns or needs with public representatives. “As elected leaders, we are committed to supporting institutions like GTB that form the backbone of Delhi’s healthcare system,” he assured.
The Speaker concluded by expressing gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff for their tireless service, acknowledging their vital role in upholding the health and dignity of society.
