Canadian coaches shape hoopsters’ dreams

The scenes at the basketball court in the Sports College, Jalandhar, are quite different these days. Every day from 4.30 to 7 pm, the court is filled with young, enthusiastic and cheerful players. The

reason — two Canadian basketball coaches have been training them since May 3. In Jalandhar, players from government and private schools have received a unique opportunity to learn from international coaches.

The Jalandhar-based Let’s Play Basketball Academy took the initiative and with the help of an NRI, invited two international-level coaches, Kingsley Hudson and Jordan Bailey, with the aim of training young players with the best techniques. This special summer camp for aspiring basketball players will conclude on May 15.

District basketball coach Anoop Kumar was also contacted, and now 90 players are learning the intricacies of the sport from the Canadian coaches. The players, aged between 12 and 17, have been training at the Sports College.

Anoop Kumar, who has been associated with the Sports Department since 2008 and has already trained national-level players, told The Tribune that this was the best decision for players who wanted to excel in basketball.

“Their way of teaching is different. They focus purely on techniques. The budding players are very excited to learn. Kids ask questions and the coaches patiently explain everything. From 4.30 in the evening until 7, both coaches remain on their feet, continuously engaging with the players," he added.

The players have also been provided with special basketball kits. They are served refreshments and after the camp ends, they will be awarded medals.

Kajal, Khushbu and Khushi, all young girls from government schools, shared that they never imagined learning from international coaches. “They are so humble. They always encourage us to keep playing and to keep trying. Even if we don’t get it right, they never lose their patience and teach us enthusiastically," the girls said.

Today, the coaches held a special session on diet, educating the players on what to eat to build strength and ensure physical and mental well-being. Anoop Kumar hopes to invite the coaches every year so that such sessions continue to inspire and support young players.
