Pune: PMC To Address Kothrud's Traffic Woes With 33 Missing Link Roads

To address the increasing traffic chaos in Kothrud, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has conducted a survey of missing link roads in the city. The survey revealed that there are 700 missing links in the city, spread over a distance of 520 kilometers. Out of these, 23 kilometers of missing roads lie in Kothrud, while 8.92 kilometers of missing link roads are found in the Karve Road area.

This means that around 33 of roads in and around Kothrud are not connected and are just on paper. The population and number of vehicles in Kothrud are increasing, but the length and width of the roads are not increasing, which is causing serious traffic issues.

Now, the PMC will start the work on missing links to avoid traffic jams at Kothrud and nearby areas.

Swati Pradhan, a resident, said, "If the missing links in the development plan in Kothrud are connected to each other, alternative roads can be made available and the load on other roads can be reduced. But since this process is progressing slowly, traffic congestion is increasing day by day."

The development plan of Kothrud suggests widening of roads, but the road is not being completed due to land acquisition issues. State Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil also held a meeting in the Municipal Corporation last month and instructed the administration to complete the missing link roads.

The development plan of PMC shows two tunnels from Sutarwadi to Pashan and Panchavati to Pashan to reach Baner and Balewadi areas from Kothrud. The total length of the tunnel from Sutarwadi to Panchavati Pashan is 1.57 kilometers, of which the tunnel section will be 950 meters long.

The total length of the tunnel from Senapati Bapat Road to Panchavati is 800 meters. The cost of this project is expected to be around Rs 310 crore.

Due to the non-possession of the road areas shown in the development plan, as well as the fact that many large buildings are being erected even before the widening, there is a large amount of traffic congestion in Kothrud and the surrounding area.
