Airport Close: 32 airports closed from 9 to 15 May, passengers will not be able to travel

Amid Indo-Pak tension, the Indian government has temporarily suspended civilian flights at 32 airports from 9 to 15 May 2025. Know which airports are affected.

Operation Sindoor: Amid the growing military tension between India and Pakistan, the Indian government has taken a major security step and decided to temporarily close 32 airports in north and west India. This decision has been taken under the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

According to the DGCA, all types of civil flight services from these airports will be temporarily closed from May 9 to May 14, 2025 (till 5:29 am on May 15 Indian time). During this time, no civil aircraft will be able to fly from ground level to unlimited height. These restrictions have been imposed solely on the basis of security and operational reasons.

Confirmed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation

Senior officials of the Ministry of Civil Aviation have confirmed that this decision is part of the strategy to protect against any potential air threat, especially drone attacks. Suspicious drone activities have been observed at 26 locations along the border with Pakistan and the Line of Control (LoC), some of which are suspected to be carrying ordnance. The possible purpose of these drones could be to harm India’s military bases or strategic civilian sites.

Which airports will remain closed

The affected airports include: Amritsar, Srinagar, Jammu, Avantipura, Hindon, Ambala, Chandigarh, Pathankot, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bhuj, Bikaner, Leh, Shimla, Kullu, and many others. These airports have been chosen because they are all located in border or strategically important areas, from where the potential threat to flights is the highest. Also, 25 major air traffic service routes falling in Delhi and Mumbai FIR (Flight Information Region) have also been closed. Its purpose is to ensure that in any military or emergency situation, the air route remains completely under the control of the army and there is no threat to civilian flights.

The closure is completely temporary

According to government sources, this closure is completely temporary and can be extended or ended based on the review of the situation. All airlines and charter operators have been instructed to plan their flights through alternate routes and airports and give prior information to passengers.

Drone activities observed

The places where drone activities have been observed include Baramulla, Srinagar, Avantipora, Nagrota, Jammu, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Pathankot, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bhuj, Lalgarh Jatta and Kuwarbet. According to defense sources, the army’s vigilance and air defense system have been further strengthened in these areas.

Thousands of passenger flights affected

This decision may affect the flights of thousands of passengers, but experts believe that in view of the current military situation, this step has been taken with complete caution and in the national interest. The Government of India has made it clear that the security of the country is paramount and any kind of infiltration or terrorist act will be given a befitting reply.
