Indian Army is one of the most powerful and decorated armies in the world and its triumphs in wars tell its tale of bravery. The army is also known for its jugaad during the war. One such example was the glorious victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan. Also called the Bangladesh Liberation War, the Indian Navy, as per several reports, ordered hundreds of condoms for a unique reason. Rather than conventional use, the Indian Navy used them in a strategic operation. But the question arises, why did the Indian Army order condoms during the war with Pakistan?

Why India Ordered Condoms During 1971 War?

During the 1971 war, after the Pakistani army attacked an Indian airbase, the Indian Navy faced attacks from multiple fronts in response. Then came up a unique idea of using condoms. The Indian Navy used hundreds of condoms for a tactical purpose. These condoms played a major role in targeting Pakistani ships with naval mines.

Chittagong Port Conflict

The incident occurred at Chittagong port in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), where Indian jawans planned to destroy Pakistani ships using limpet mines, which were built to explode within 30 minutes.

To protect the mines underwater and ensure timely explosions, the Indian Navy reportedly ordered hundreds of condoms and used them to cover the mines, according to ABP Live.

During their operations in Bangladesh’s challenging terrain, Indian soldiers employed condoms as a makeshift waterproof covering for their gun barrels to prevent moisture damage.
