'Godzilla x Kong: Supernova': What we know about the Monsterverse franchise's sixth offering

Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros have dropped the first teaser of the third installment in the 'Godzilla x Kong' franchise. Titled as 'Godzilla x Kong: Supernova', the movie is still in production, and is set to release on March 26, 2027.

Netizens are buzzing with guesses regarding the plot of the virtually-unknown movie across social media, with many assuming a space angle for the film, given the connotations of the term 'supernova' in the film's subtitle. Some even claimed to notice a binary code in the teaser, which they claimed hinted at a new 'spaceGodzilla'.

The new teaser opens at a busy Monarch call centre, where a computer screen displays a hotline number: (240) MONARCH, a real number that fans can call! The recorded message thanks callers for reporting Titan activity, saying: “Your help reporting Titan sightings plays a critical role in keeping our world safe”.

Fans across the world also speculated that the number might give them text message updates about the film.

The movie will be directed by Grant Sputore ('We Bury the Dead', 'I Am Mother'), and is said to have several new human characters alongside Titans Godzilla and Kong, as an apocalypse looms large. Dan Stevens will return as Trapper Beasley, the titan veterinarian first seen in 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire'.

"This is (literal) HUGE news. It's also a huge honour," the filmmaker said in an Instagram post after the news broke.

"I've been a giant monster fan for as long as I've been a fan of anything—and to follow in the footsteps of the other incredible directors who've had their turn in the MonsterVerse is a dream come true. Can't thank Legendary enough for this Titan sized opportunity."

The new human cast includes Kaitlyn Dever ('Last of Us', 'Unbelievable', 'Dopesick'), Jack O’ Connell ('Sinners', 'Sas: Rogue Heroes'), Delroy Lindo, Mathew Modine, Alycia Debnam Carey and Sam Neill ('Jurassic Park' franchise, 'Peaky Blinders').

The movie will be scripted by Dave Callaham ('Shang Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings') and Michael Lloyd Green. Other films he has written for include 'Mortal Kombat', 'The Expendables', and 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse'.

A large number of netizens also praised the return of David Callaham—the director of 'Godzilla' (2014)—knowing that Callaham most likely would give Godzilla his much-needed screentime, as opposed to 'Godzilla vs Kong' (2021) and 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' (2024), where Kong occupied the screen much longer than his rival.

'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' ended with Godzilla, Kong and Mothra going their separate ways after overcoming Skar King. It’s still unclear if Mothra will appear in 'Supernova', intensifying suspense around the new movie.

The new sequel is the sixth movie in the critically acclaimed Monsterverse franchise, which includes 'Godzilla' (2014), 'Kong: Skull Island' (2017), 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' (2019), 'Godzilla vs Kong' (2021) and 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' (2024). The last movie is the highest-grossing instalment in the franchise.
