As India, Pakistan Agree To Immediate Ceasefire, Jaishankar Stresses ‘Uncompromising Stance Against Terrorism’
In a significant development amid heightened tensions, India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire across all domains—land, air and sea. The agreement, reached directly between the two countries, comes in the wake of India’s retaliatory precision strikes on terror sites under ‘Operation Sindoor’ following the April 22 Pahalgam massacre.
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar underlined India’s unwavering position on terrorism, stating, “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.”
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed that the ceasefire was finalised through direct communication. “@MEAIndia announces that stoppage of firing & military action between India and Pakistan was worked out directly between the two countries. The Pak DGMO initiated the call this afternoon after which discussions took place and understanding reached. There is no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any other place,” it stated.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri detailed the timeline of the development, saying, “Pakistan’s Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) called Indian DGMO at 15:35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 1700 hours Indian Standard Time. Today, instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will talk again on the 12th of May at 1200 hours.”
Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister Confirms Islamabad’s Position On Ceasefire With India
Confirming Islamabad’s position, Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar posted on X: “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
According to sources cited by news agency ANI, the understanding was a direct outcome of bilateral engagement. “The Pak DGMO initiated the call this afternoon, after which discussions took place and understanding was reached. There is no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any other place,” the sources were quoted as saying.
The ceasefire announcement follows intense diplomatic manoeuvring after India launched precision strikes on nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Wednesday, under ‘Operation Sindoor’, in response to the deadly Pahalgam attack that left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead.
