Mohanlal's 'Thudarum' becomes the third highest-grossing Malayalam film worldwide

Mohanlal’s crime thriller Thudarum has placed itself in the record books by overtaking 2018 and becoming the third highest-grossing Malayalam movie at the global box office.
According to Sacnilk, the film has grossed over ₹184 crores worldwide within 2 weeks of its release on 25th April. Directed by Tharun Moorthy, Thudarum features Mohanlal as a taxi driver Shanmugham, whose life turns to chaos after his car lands in police custody. The film also stars Shobhana, marking her on-screen reunion with Mohanlal after a long gap of 15 years. The film not only achieved box office success but also praise from critics for its gripping plot and powerful acting. The film also received positive reviews from other states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
The film opened with ₹5.4 crores from Kerala alone, and by the third day, it had made ₹70 crores worldwide, becoming the second fastest Mollywood movie to cross the 50 crore mark. Thudarun has now moved up the ladder, leaving 2018 in third place, which has grossed ₹180.03 crores globally. As per the reports of industry tracker Sacnilk, the top two spots remain with L2: Empuran( ₹266.68 crores) and Manjummel Boys (241.03 crores).
When it comes to Indian box office collections, Thudarum is in the fourth position, beating two of the Malayalam box office winners of 2024, Avesham (₹85.16 crores) and The Goat Life (₹85.26 crores).
Thudarum’s success also highlights the growing global appeal for Malayalam cinema and once again establishes Mohanlal’s status as one of the leading figures of the industry.
