Two Names Emerge For Captain & Vice-Captain Roles In IND vs ENG Test Series

Team India is set to travel to England in June for a five-Test series. With Rohit Sharma announcing his retirement from Test cricket, all eyes are now on who will take over the leadership responsibilities in the longest format. While several names are being considered, two young stars have emerged as front-runners for the roles of captain and vice-captain.

Shubman Gill likely to be named Test Captain

According to a PTI report, Shubman Gill is currently the leading candidate to become India's next Test captain. Gill, who already leads Punjab in domestic cricket and has captained Gujarat Titans in the IPL for two seasons, is widely seen as a long-term investment. The 25-year-old has played 32 Tests so far, scoring 1,893 runs, including 5 centuries and 7 fifties.

Rishabh Pant may be named vice-captain

Rishabh Pant is being tipped as the likely choice for the vice-captaincy role. Having made his Test debut in 2018, Pant has featured in 43 matches, scoring 2,948 runs with 6 hundreds and 15 fifties. His aggressive style and ability to change games single-handedly make him a strong leader in the making.

Why Bumrah is not in contention

Jasprit Bumrah was initially seen as a strong contender for the captaincy. However, given his workload and history of injuries, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly hesitant to hand him full-time leadership.

Bumrah played all five Tests during the Australia series but missed the Champions Trophy after suffering an injury in the final Test. With his fitness being a top priority, the selectors are looking for someone who can consistently be on the field - and that puts Gill ahead in the race.
