The Civil Services Exam is conducted annually in three stages – preliminary, main, and interview- by the UPSC to select officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), among others. Clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination on the first attempt is no easy feat. Yet, some candidates manage to achieve this rare milestone and go on to become well-known names in households across the country. Instantly, their social media accounts gain followers. IAS officer Smita Sabharwal is one such example — widely admired and with a strong following on social media.

At the age of 23, in her reportedly second attempt, Smita secured an impressive All India Rank of 4 in the 2000 UPSC CSE. Sabharwal, currently Special Chief Secretary, Youth Advancement, Tourism & Culture (YAT&C) and Director, Archaeology, has been transferred and posted as Member Secretary, Telangana Finance Commission, a post she was holding before her transfer to YAT&C in November 2024. Recently, the 2001-batch IAS officer had re-posted the content amid the protests by HCU students, environment activists and opposition parties over alleged destruction of the forest on the Kancha Gachibowli land.

IAS officer Smita Sabharwal is a name that inspires thousands of civil service aspirants and young students across the country. With a strong presence on social media and a growing fan base, many students look up to her not just for her professional achievements, but also for her academic journey. She completed her schooling at St. Ann’s High School in Secunderabad, Telangana. Smita Sabharwal completed her Class 12th, also known as the Indian School Certificate (ISC) Examination, in 1995. Her school was affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi. She secured a Grade A in the SUPW & Community Service. Her subject combination included English, Hindi, Economics, Structure of Commerce, and Principles of Accounts — a well-rounded mix that laid a solid foundation for her future in civil services.

According to her CISCE ISC(Class 12th)mark sheet, Smita Sabharwal scored 94 out of 100 in both English and Hindi. She scored 90 out of 100 in Economics in her CISCE Indian School Certificate Examination of 1995. Smita Sabharwal excelled in her Class 12 board exams, scoring 86 out of 100 in Structure of Commerce and an impressive 97 in Principles of Accounts, earning an ‘A’ grade.

She has earned the distinction of being one of India’s youngest female IAS officers. IAS officer Smita Sabharwal is fondly referred to as the “people’s officer.”
