Amitabh Bachchan began his acting career in 1969 with Saat Hindustani, but it took him 36 years to had his first on-screen kiss in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black (2005). The critically acclaimed drama featured Big B alongside Rani Mukerji in a pivotal role, with Ayesha Kapur, Shernaz Patel and Dhritiman Chatterjee in supporting characters.

Black marked the first time when Amitabh Bachchan shared an on-screen kiss with a co-star. In the film, Michelle, portrayed by Rani Mukerji, develops romantic feelings for Debraj, played by Amitabh Bachchan and even asks him to kiss her. This moment leads to an intimate kiss between the two characters. At the time of filming, Big B was 63 and Rani Mukerji was 27, resulting in a 36-year gap between them.

While the lip-lock scene between Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji sparked a lot of buzz, according to reports, it didn’t settle well with Junior Bachchan. Abhishek Bachchan, who was rumoured to be in a serious relationship with Rani Mukerji, was furious seeing his girlfriend sharing such an intimate moment on-screen with his father. Reports claim that Abhishek was left  upset, and began distancing himself from Rani.

Despite Rani’s efforts to clear the air and repair their relationship, the rift had already taken its toll. Their once-strong bond eventually faded, and Abhishek cut all ties with her. The situation reportedly escalated to an extent that Rani was not even invited to Abhishek and Aishwarya’s wedding in 2007.

Following the incident, Rani gradually distanced herself from the Bachchan family. The alleged fallout between Rani and Abhishek also appeared to influence casting choices. Due to the lingering tension between them, Saif Ali Khan replaced Abhishek Bachchan in Bunty Aur Babli 2. 

While neither Rani or Abhishek has ever publicly addressed this controversy, but their visible distance over the years has been hard to ignore.
