In 2023, Danny and Michael Philippou’s Talk to Me made a strong mark both commercially as well as critically. This Australian supernatural horror film earned widespread praise from critics and audience for its innovative take on the genre and its distinctly modern, ’21st-century’ storytelling style.
Starring in Talk To Me are Miranda Otto, Zoe Terakes, Otis Dhanji, Joe Bird, Sophie Wilde, and Alexandra Jensen. The story follows 17-year-old Mia, who is grieving the recent loss of her mother. She and her friends discover a mysterious embalmed hand that allows them to communicate with spirits. Initially, the group treats this as a thrilling party game, but thinks take a dark turn when Mia’s friend Riley becomes possessed and is severely injured. As Mia becomes increasingly obsessed with contacting her mother’s spirit, she begins to lose her grip on reality, leading to tragic consequences.
Talk to Me first garnered attention at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it attracted interest from several International distributors. It was released globally on 27 July 2023 and became a major box office success, earning nearly $90 million on a modest budget if just $4.5 million.
