Birthplace Of Lord Buddha:
The festival is of great significance to followers of Buddhism, who honour the teachings of Gautam Buddha and offer special prayers. It is mainly celebrated in East and South Asia. As per historical accounts, Lord Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal. He attained enlightenment at the age of 35 and renounced worldly life.
Sacred Last Three Days Of Vaishakha:
The last three days of the Vaishakha month — May 10, 11, and 12 — are considered highly auspicious. These days are believed to carry the merit of all good deeds done throughout the month. According to the Skanda Purana, the final three days of Vaishakha — Trayodashi (Saturday), Chaturdashi (Sunday), and Purnima (Monday) — are known as Pushkarini, capable of absolving sins and granting eternal merit.
Lord Vishnu’s Three Incarnations:
Scriptures mention that Lord Vishnu incarnated in three forms during these days — Narasimha Jayanti on Trayodashi, Kurma Jayanti on Chaturdashi, and Buddha Jayanti on Purnima. Bathing, charity, and worship during these days are considered extremely rewarding and are said to grant family happiness and prosperity.
Those unable to perform daily sacred baths during the month can still receive spiritual merit by bathing in holy rivers before sunrise on these three days.
Recommended Rituals:
- Reciting the Bhagavad Gita during these days is believed to yield the spiritual benefits of an Ashwamedha Yajna.
- Chanting the Vishnu Sahasranama results in infinite merit.
- Performing Abhishek of Lord Vishnu with milk and water on Purnima grants entry to Vaikuntha Dham.
- Listening to the Shrimad Bhagavatam during this period cleanses all sins committed knowingly or unknowingly.
Offering Arghya To The Moon:
Devotees visit Bodh Gaya from around the world on Buddha Purnima to worship the sacred Bodhi tree. After a holy bath, people offer prayers to Lord Satyanarayan at home and later perform Arghya (offering water) to the moon at night. This tradition is believed to bring peace of mind and prosperity.
Auspicious Timing:
Buddha Purnima will begin on May 11 at 8:02 PM and end on May 12 at 11:26 PM. As per the Hindu tradition, observance is based on the sunrise of the Purnima tithi, hence Buddha Purnima will be celebrated on May 12.
Ravi Yoga On Buddha Purnima:
The day also features an auspicious Ravi Yoga from 5:32 AM to 6:17 AM on May 12. This yoga is considered highly beneficial for eliminating obstacles and initiating new ventures.
Importance Of Buddha Purnima:
Also known as Vaishakha Purnima or Peepal Purnima, this full moon is revered as the most significant among all Purnima days. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and Lord Buddha is believed to be his ninth incarnation. It is on this very day, under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, that Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment.
Pilgrims gather at sacred sites like Haridwar and Rishikesh for ritualistic baths, considered spiritually purifying. Devotees also offer food, clothing, and donations to Brahmins and the needy, and observe Satyanarayan Vrat.
