Chief Justice of India designate B. R. Gavai on Sunday said war is not good for any country and we as citizens of this country are equally concerned about the entire situation.

Citing the example of the Russia-Ukraine war which is ongoing, Justice Gavai said, "War is not the solution to anything. We should work on resolving this."

Talking informally to journalists, Justice Gavai said, "I am equally concerned about the entire situation, following developments about the entire situation on TV. It's a good step that the ceasefire is there now. A lot of cost is involved when a war takes place."

On the question of how for the first time in the history of the Supreme Court of India, a formal statement and two minutes of silence were observed after the April 22 Pahalgam incident in which 26 lives were lost, Justice Gavai said, "I was moved when I saw the newspapers next morning and immediately spoke to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna who was attending a conference outside the country and was graciously given permission to observe two minutes silence and also pass a statement on behalf of supreme court condemning the attack on tourists."

On the question of social media misuse, Justice Gavai said, "Though I don't follow social media on my own, I equally feel judges can't sit in their ivory towers and pass judgments. We have to understand the issues of the common man."

Justice Gavai will be the first Buddhist Chief Justice of India when he takes oath on May 14.

On the occasion of Buddha Purnima Justice Gavai will be going to Shanti Stupa located at Inderprastha Park and will offer prayers.

"I am very lucky to take oath soon after the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima," Justice Gavai said.

Born in a Maharashtra village, Justice Gavai still loves to visit his village thrice a year, especially on the birth and death anniversary of his late father R S Gavai, former Governor of Kerala and Bihar and during the annual fair at his village.

On May 14 when Justice Gavai takes oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, he will be the second Chief Justice from a Dalit background to head the Supreme Court of India. Justice Gavai is inspired by Dr Ambedkar and his judgements and orders have an impression of the same.
