Chinese Man Breaks Up With Girlfriend After Her Phone Connects To Hotel WiFi

A Chinese man ended his relationship with his girlfriend after he discovered that her phone was automatically connected to the Wi-fi of a hotel, which was supposed to be their first visit there together.

The woman, surnamed Li, told Chongqing TV that the incident occurred at a hotel in southwestern China’s Chongqing municipality during the May Day holiday. As Li was trying to access her digital identity card as she forgot to bring her actual ID card required to check in. While doing so, Li's phone auto-connected to the hotel's front desk Wi-Fi.

Since both are locals, the man questioned whether she had visited the hotel with someone else previously. Li insisted it was her first time there and couldn't explain the automatic connection. Unable to resolve the dispute, the man left, suspecting infidelity.

Another Hotel With Same Username, Password In Chongqing

Li stated that even her friends doubted her, adding that she felt humiliated, and compelling her to find a way to prove her innocence. Meanwhile, after Li realised that a separate hotel in Chongqing, where she was employed, offered Wi-fi with the same username and password.

Following the discovery, she contacted her ex-boyfriend to explain, but he refused to have any sort of conversation and deleted her account on a chat app.

Li reached out to Chongqing TV to share her side of the story, emphasising that she had no intention of reconciling with someone who didn’t trust her.

To verify her claim, a TV reporter visited Li’s workplace, successfully connected to the Wi-Fi at the reception, and then went to the same hotel Li and her ex had visited. There, the reporter’s phone also auto-connected to the hotel's Wi-Fi.

A cybersecurity expert, surnamed Liu, explained to Chongqing TV that smartphones can automatically connect to new Wi-Fi networks if they share the same name and password as a previously saved one. He also warned that enabling auto-connect can pose security risks and recommended turning off the feature.
