Pregnant Woman Dies Months After Being Given ‘Expired Saline' In Kolkata Hospital

A woman lost her life in a medical establishment in Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal, on Monday, months after reportedly being given expired saline while in an advanced stage of pregnancy, a health department official said.

The patient, identified as Nasrin Khatoon, had been undergoing treatment at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital since January and passed away at Kolkata’s state-run SSKM Hospital. She was allegedly administered expired intravenous fluid during her earlier treatment.

In a similar incident at the same hospital in January, another pregnant woman, identified as Mamoni Rui Das, lost her life allegedly after she was also administered "expired" Ringer’s Lactate saline. Ringer’s Lactate is a fluid used to treat dehydration and restore the body’s fluid balance.

"Following treatment in all these months, Khatoon’s condition was improving. She was shifted from the ICU to a general ward some time back. But her condition started deteriorating from May 9, and she died this morning," the official said, news agency PTI reported.

The official noted that Khatoon had been undergoing dialysis regularly since she was admitted to the SSKM Hospital.

Rui Das lost her life on January 10, while the condition of four others, Mampi Singh, Nasrin Khatoon, Minara Bibi, and Rekha Sau, who were admitted to the same hospital, worsened and were brought to SSKM Hospital.

West Bengal CID Probing Case

In response to the incident, a 13-member committee has been constituted by the health department to probe into the matter.

Later, the patient identified as Mampi Singh and Minara Bibi were discharged from the hospital, while the treatment of Nasrin continued at the Kolkata facility, the official added.

The West Bengal CID is probing the case after the state government suspended 12 doctors from Midnapore Medical College and Hospital for alleged negligence related to the incident. Additionally, the government offered Rs 5 lakh in compensation and a job to Rui Das' family.
