India launches high-tech e-passports; all you need to know

India has launched e-passports in several cities, integrating electronic features with traditional passport design under the Passport Seva Programme 2.0. These e-passports contain an RFID chip for secure data storage and enhanced security features. While traditional passports remain valid until expiry, the government aims to extend e-passport availability nationwide by mid-2025, with Chennai already issuing them since March 2025.
