In a case that has shocked Hyderabad’s medical community, Dr. Namrata Chigurupati, a well-known doctor and CEO of Omega Hospitals, was arrested on May 9 for allegedly purchasing cocaine worth ₹5 lakh. According to police, she was caught in the act while receiving a packet of the drug inside her Mini Cooper near a restaurant.

She wasn’t alone. The police also arrested Balakrishna Rampyar Ram, a man from Mumbai who delivered the packet. Together, they were found with 53 grams of high-grade cocaine. Both were taken into custody and sent to judicial remand, while police continue to investigate the larger drug network.

Drug Habit Started During MBA in Spain

Dr. Chigurupati reportedly admitted that her drug use began during her MBA studies in Spain between 2021 and 2022. After returning to India, she continued using cocaine, first through a local DJ who was dating a friend. Later, she came into contact with Vansh Thakkar, now believed to be the main supplier.

How the ₹5 Lakh Deal Went Down

Police said the doctor handed over ₹5 lakh in cash to Balakrishna on May 4. He delivered the money to Thakkar in Mumbai and came back to Hyderabad with the drugs on May 8. When he met Dr. Chigurupati that evening to deliver the packet and received an extra ₹10,000, both were arrested on the spot.

Investigators revealed that the doctor had been buying cocaine from Thakkar regularly for nearly a year. Instructions for the delivery were sent via WhatsApp using disappearing messages. Each month, she followed his directions and collected her supply.

From Medical Success to Legal Trouble

Dr. Chigurupati is an accomplished medical professional who earned her MBBS in 2014 and an MD in radiation oncology from Kochi in 2017. Her arrest has stunned many, given her professional standing.

Search for Drug Network Kingpin Continues

Police are still looking for Vansh Thakkar, the alleged mastermind behind the interstate drug operation. They believe the network may involve several more people.

Both accused have been booked under Sections 8(c) and 22(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which deal with illegal drug possession and trafficking.
