'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning', 'Final Destination: Bloodlines', 'Murderbot': OTT and Theatre releases this week | May 12 - May 18

In theatres, Indian audiences will have the rare privilege of seeing Tom Cruise's new "mission" a week earlier than the rest of the world along with the latest (and highest-rated yet) entry in the Final Destination franchise. Here's the entire list of big-screen and OTT releases.

THEATRE RELEASES

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

Release date: May 17

The eighth instalment of the popular action franchise will release in India on May 17, before its global release on May 23, in the regular, IMAX and 4DX formats. It will pick up from the events of the previous entry, Dead Reckoning. Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt races against time to fight an intangible threat called The Entity. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film also features Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Hayley Atwell, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett.

Final Destination: Bloodlines

Release date: May 14

The sixth entry in the successful American horror franchise, the film is a reworking of the central concept that made the original films successful — of death itself as the principal antagonist, with one character experiencing a premonition about a horrifying event and the attempts to cheat death. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein from a screenplay by Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor, it has a story by Jon Watts, Guy Busick, and Lori Evans Taylor.

Samshayam

Release date: May 16

Sharafudheen and Vinay Forrt, who got noticed in the Malayalam hit Premam (2015), and have collaborated a few times since, in films such as Georgettan's Pooram (2017) and Role Models (2017), are sharing the screen as leads in debutant Rajesh Ravi's directorial Samshayam, which co-stars Lijomol Jose and Priyavamvada Krishnan. Expected to be a fun entertainer, the film has Kerala State Award-winning cinematographer Manesh Madhavan and composer Hesham Abdul Wahab in the team.

Maaman

Release date: May 16

Soori and Aishwarya Lekshmi lead this Tamil film written and directed by Prasanth Pandiyaraj from a story by Soori. While no plot details are known currently, the film is said to be a family-oriented drama. Pandiyaraj is known for films such as Vilangu and Bruce Lee. Maaman also stars Malayalam actress Swasika, last seen in the Tamil film Lubber Pandhu, and Rajkiran in integral roles.

OTT RELEASES

Love, Death & Robots: Volume 4

Release date: May 15

Netflix is back with a fourth season of Love, Death & Robots, the acclaimed anthology of animated shorts conjured up by some of the biggest creative minds in the entertainment industry. As before, the new season will traverse various genres, ranging from horror to sci-fi to fantasy. The new season comprises 10 shorts. Creator Tim Miller returns in the new season alongside executive producer David Fincher. The latter has directed the premiere episode titled "Can't Stop".

Murderbot

Streaming platform: Apple TV+

Release date: May 16

Created by Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, this Apple Studios-backed series is based on Martha Wells’ bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series. Billed as a sci-fi thriller/comedy, it stars Alexander Skarsgård as a half-biological cyborg that, according to the official logline, must "hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe."

Neil Nitin Mukesh plays the lead alongside Jacqueline Fernandez and others in this web series that follows young talents chasing their dreams in music and dance — a story of passion, rivalry, and finding who you really are, where talent isn't enough without true drive. Set in Mumbai's Andersons College, it is produced by Lio Creative Labs, penned by Aditya Bhat and directed by Abhishek Sharma.

Maranamass

Streaming platform: SonyLIV

Release date: May 15

Written and directed by debutant Sivaprasad, this Malayalam dark comedy is having its post-theatrical release on SonyLIV. Featuring Basil Joseph, Suresh Krishna, Babu Antony, Rajesh Madhavan and Anishma Anilkumar in the lead roles, its plot draws comedy from a chain of quirky and chaotic events involving serial killings, and with some social commentary thrown in. Produced by Tovino Thomas, it features the actor in an unusual cameo.
