Bhubaneswar Airport Likely to Be Privatized Soon

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar is likely to be privatized as part of the Civil Aviation Ministry’s renewed asset monetization initiative.

BPIA, a key profit-generating hub, is one of five major airports selected for privatization, paired with smaller airports. It will be paired with Karnataka’s Hubballi airport, with the leasing agreement expected to be finalized by July or August 2025, as per reports.

The ministry’s privatization drive, relaunched in February 2025, aims to enhance revenue and operational efficiency.

BPIA, previously paired with Trichy, is among 11 airports handling 10% of India’s domestic and 4% of international passenger traffic, making it a prime candidate for private investment.

The leasing model, under a public-private partnership (PPP), is designed to enhance management and infrastructure by leveraging private sector efficiency, the Ministry stated.
