In line with the latest push by the Centre to transform India as a semiconductor hub, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Union Cabinet approved a joint venture between HCL Technologies and chipmaker Foxconn to set up a semiconductor unit in the country, with an outlay of ₹3,700 crore.

Once operational, the HCL-Foxconn semiconductor plant is set to manufacture 20,000 wafers per month, stated the union IT minister.

The JV will pave the way for the country's sixth semiconductor unit under the India Semiconductor Mission, added Vaishnaw. The unit is planned in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) in Uttar Pradesh, close to the Jewar airport.

The major production from the unit which is set to employ at least 2,000 people, would be display driver chips used in mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and other devices, according to the minister.

Recently, Vaishnaw also inaugurated a new design centre at Noida by the Japanese semiconductor company Renesas, and hailed the high level of confidence investors have in the country's talent and economy.

"Everybody wants to come to India at a much faster pace," Vaishnaw had then said.

THE WEEK, in its issue dated April 27, 2025, covered India's semiconductor mission in great detail, including Tata Electronics building a state-of-the-art assembly and test facility at Jagiroad in Assam.

Another chip-making giant Micron is also setting up an ATMP (assembly, testing, marking, and packaging) facility at Sanand in Gujarat. Construction work for the PSMC-Tata Electronics facility in Dholera is also in full swing.
