History Today: When McDonald’s flipped its first burger in California

On May 15, 1940, the McDonald brothers opened the first McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino, California. It began as a typical drive-in with a large menu and carhop service. What set it apart was its focus on speed and low prices, as burgers, fries, and shakes were sold at half the usual cost and served much faster than elsewhere. Also on this day in 1905, the city of Las Vegas was founded. It would soon become the fastest-growing city in the United States
