In the glamorous world of showbiz, where success is always fleeting, the victory of an actor changes every Friday. While a lot of times, an actor’s success is judged through their box office success but it is also the dichotomy and diversity of their work that becomes the building block to their stardom.

One such actor who has been an example of this is Malayalam superstar Mammootty. Acting in various films and different roles, this actor made a mark by working in more than 400 films. Even though he didn’t cross the mark of touching more than Rs. 100 crores milestone at the box office, his unique record made him stand out. In 1983, he acted in more than 36 films in a single year, whereas in 1984, he acted in 34 films, 28 in 1985, and 35 in 1986.

Born on 7 September 1951 as Mohammed Kutty Panparambil Ismai, Mammootty has acted in Malayalam films as well as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English films.

Bagging many awards for his impeccable acting. Mammootty has won three national awards. The first award was in 1990 for ‘Mathilukal’ and ‘Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha’, the second award in 1994 for ‘Poonthan Maad’ and ‘Vidhyan’, the third award in 2000 for his role of B.R. Ambedkar in ‘Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. Besides this, he has also won 11 Kerala State Film Awards, 11 Kerala Film Critics Awards, and 15 Filmfare Awards (South). In 1998, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri.

Even though Mammootty didn’t receive too much commercial success, the films he did mostly revolved around various issues of society. His films like ‘New Delhi’, ‘Amaram’, ‘Kajal’ raised social issues which made the audience think.

Speaking of his personal life,  Mammootty tied the knot in 1979 in an arranged marriage set up with Sulfath Kutty. The couple has two children – one daughter, Surumi, and a son, Dulquer Salmaan. Surumi is a graphic designer and is away from the film industry. Dulquer Salmaan is a leading actor of Malayalam films. Dulquer has attracted audiences with films like ‘Ustad Hotel’, ‘Bangalore Days’, ‘Mahanati’, ‘Seetaramam’, ‘Lucky Bhaskar’. He has also acted in Tamil and Telugu films and made his mark in South Indian cinema.

Recently, his acting in films like ‘Pujjikkadu Manthamma Mogga’ has been praised by critics. Mammootty has also achieved success in the field of filmmaking. He has made many films under the banner ‘Mammootty Company’.
