Navi Mumbai News: NMMC Launches Crackdown On Plastic; Distributor, Shopkeepers Fined For Violating Ban

Navi Mumbai: In a continued crackdown against single-use plastic, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its anti-plastic campaign under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde. The civic body is making determined efforts to curb the usage and distribution of plastic bags across the city.

As part of this initiative, the flying squad from Zone 1, under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Mr. Somnath Potre, laid a strategic trap and intercepted a small tempo found transporting banned single-use plastic bags. Authorities seized 50 kilograms of plastic bags and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the offender.

In a similar operation, the Zone 2 flying squad, under Deputy Commissioner Dr. Kailas Gaikwad, raided B Mart located in Sector 11, Ghansoli, and confiscated plastic bags being used on the premises. A fine of Rs 5,000 was recovered during this raid as well.

Additionally, another raid conducted by the Zone 2 team found plastic bags being used at Mahalaxmi Fast Food in Sector 6, Airoli. One kilogram of plastic bags was seized and a penalty of Rs 5,000 was imposed.

The NMMC has been actively raising awareness among citizens about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and public health. Through these enforcement drives, the corporation is not only penalising violators but also promoting the use of eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth and paper bags.

The civic body has urged residents and businesses to support the movement by completely avoiding the use of plastic bags and opting for sustainable options. With stricter surveillance and citizen cooperation, the NMMC aims to make Navi Mumbai a plastic-free city.
