PU to make entry stickers for vehicles a must
Panjab University has started preparations to allow only vehicles with entry stickers on the campus from the next academic session.
The issue was discussed during a meeting of the chairpersons of various departments. Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Vig, who presided over the meeting, said QR-coded stickers would be issued to the faculty staff and students so as to prevent misuse or copying. She asked the department to submit data of vehicles of students, faculty and staff members.
Dean University Instructions Prof Yojna Rawat, Finance & Development Officer Dr Vikram Nayyar and other officers, chairpersons/ directors/ coordinators of various teaching departments/ institutions and campus deans were present at the meeting.
Meanwhile, the one-way traffic system on two roads on the PU campus received a mix response on its first day today.
The university authorities had decided to implement one-way traffic in the major academic area of the Sector 14 campus on a trial basis. The two stretches — from the Arts Block to the Law Department, and Chemistry Department to Zoology Department roundabout — were chosen for the same.
While a majority of students were unaware about the decision, many opted to park their vehicles away and move to the departments on foot. Due to scorching heat, some students demanded introduction of a shuttle service on these roads.
“It’s a good decision, but the authorities should start a shuttle bus/auto service free-of-cost for students. Also, proper signage should be installed at the university entrance so that everyone becomes aware about the one-way routes. Also, the university should hire traffic marshals to implement the same,” said Amit, a student.
Meanwhile, some faculty members demanded that the one-way road should be implemented for specific period. “Instead of imposing the one-way traffic rule throughout the day, it should be implemented two hours in the morning and another two in the afternoon,” said a faculty member.
“This is a welcome step, but if anyone breaks the law intentionally, he/she should be fined,” added Preeti, another student.
A PU spokesperson had informed that the move was aimed at better traffic management, reducing congestion and promoting healthy habits like walking and cycling among students and staff. The university will monitor the impact of this trial and decide appropriately to make further improvements.
