Following legal row, 'Bhool Chuk Maaf’ makers revert to original release plan; Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi film to now release on May 23

Due to the recent India-Pakistan tensions, a few filmmakers, actors, musicians and other celebrities opted to put a hold on major events. One such example is the Rajkummar Rao-Wamiqa Gabbi film Bhool Chuk Maaf.  Dinesh Vijan, producer of Maddock Films, the company behind the film, made a social media announcement recently announcing their decision to opt for an OTT premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 16, 2025.

However, PVR Inox didn't take kindly to this decision and filed a case in the Bombay High Court against Maddock Films, for a breach of contract and demanded a compensation of Rs 60 cr. As per the latest news, the legal battle is settled and the makers have reverted to their original theatrical release plan. In a new statement released by Dinesh Vijan and Kamal Gianchandani, founder of PVR Inox, the film will hit big screens on May 23.

“As our surroundings begin to heal, we’re especially grateful to offer a theatrical experience for a film that speaks from the heart. In these times, when family means everything, we urge audiences to head to the theatres with their loved ones, share a laugh, reflect on life, and enjoy a story that, we hope, brings joy. We’re also incredibly thankful to our exhibitors as partners for their continued support, flexibility and commitment to theatrical storytelling. The release environment has changed for the better, and we’re proud to collaborate once again with them for our film’s release”, said Dinesh Vijan.

Kamal Gianchandnani added “We are proud to affirm our deep commitment to theatrical experience – a cornerstone of Indian cinema culture and the most immersive way to experience storytelling at its finest. We fully understand and respect the challenges faced by the team at Maddock Films in finalizing the release of Bhool Chuk Maaf. We are thankful for their continued faith in the theatrical model and their decision to bring this film to audiences where it truly belongs – in cinemas. Their support reinforces the strong bond between content creators and exhibitors, and we look forward to a successful release”.

Written and directed by Karan Sharma and produced by Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios, the film is said to be a lighthearted combination of love and a time-loop concept.
