Lord Jhulelal holds a special place of reverence among Sindhi Hindus and is considered their protector. Although there is no mention of Jhulelal in any specific ancient scripture or Purana, he is worshipped based on strong traditional beliefs. Jhulelal is also credited with founding the Dariya Panth, a spiritual sect.

Appearance And Symbolism Of Lord Jhulelal

The form of Lord Jhulelal closely resembles Varuna Dev, the god of water. Hence, Jhulelal is regarded as the human incarnation of Varuna Dev. He is depicted as an elderly man seated on a lotus that rests upon a fish. One of his hands holds a rosary, while the other is in the abhaya mudra. He wears a crown on his head.

The Legend Of Jhulelal’s Manifestation

A popular legend explains that Sindhi Hindus were being coerced into converting to Islam through threats and oppression. To seek liberation from Mughal tyranny, the people gathered to pray along the banks of the Sindhu River. Pleased by their devotion, Lord Jhulelal appeared from the river.

Jhulelal told his devotees that he would be born after 40 days on the second day of the bright half of the Chaitra month. The Sindhis worshipped Varuna Dev for 40 days, after which an incarnation named Uderolal was born into a village family. From his birth, Uderolal performed many miracles, and people began to see Lord Jhulelal’s image in him. Consequently, Uderolal came to be known as Jhulelal. He is also known by the name Udaychand.

Jhulelal’s Role In Ending Oppression

After his birth, Jhulelal freed the people from the tyranny of the Mughal ruler Mirkhashah. Even Mirkhashah bowed before Jhulelal and vowed to respect both Hindu and Muslim religions.
