Security beefed up in wake of border tension, local threats
In the wake of the de-escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, local authorities have emphasised that the police force in the region should not ease off their vigilance, particularly given the diverse population comprising Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and Hindus.
The security measures have been significantly enhanced, with a special focus on protecting strategic installations such as railway stations, bus stands and the crucial Ludhiana-Dhuri Railway line that runs through both Ludhiana and Malerkotla districts.
While the Government Railway Police (GRP) is responsible for safeguarding the railway stations and other railway installations, the district police are also leaving no stone unturned in maintaining a constant watch over the region.
Sources within the administration have confirmed that the heightened security comes after weeks of tense conditions. As part of their proactive strategy, police in Malerkotla have been advised to ensure comprehensive vigilance in key areas. Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) at Ahmedgarh, Amargarh and Malerkotla have been instructed to oversee combing operations in their respective areas. Station House Officers (SHOs) are also tasked with ensuring surveillance at public spaces, including bus stands and railway stations.
SSP Gagan Ajit Singh shared that the beat officers have been specifically directed to carry out special checks near railway stations, public places and religious sites. The primary goal is to prevent the infiltration of antisocial elements who may attempt to enter the region under the guise of visitors or local residents’ relatives.
“In addition to district-level supervision, which includes night domination, combing operations and flag marches, Circle Officers have been assigned to closely monitor the activities of SHOs in their respective subdivisions,” said SSP Singh. He also commended the diligence shown by the police force during these tense times.
The night domination strategy involves rigorous evaluation of force deployment, updating PCR teams, maintaining regular contact with officers in the field, conducting vehicle checks and performing surprise inspections of senior officials. These steps are being taken to ensure enhanced vigilance throughout the region.
Although authorities maintain that the increased security measures are a routine exercise, sources suggest that recent events have played a significant role in prompting the action. These include the Sangrur Jail illegalities, the Majithia hooch tragedy and the arrest of two individuals in an espionage case, all of which have contributed to the decision to tighten security.
