Rohtak varsity launches 4-yr statistics programme
The department of statistics at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) here has announced the launch of a comprehensive 4-year undergraduate programme in statistics, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The initiative marks a significant step in strengthening academic pathways for students interested in data, analytics and research.
“The programme will equip students with a deep understanding of core statistical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, sampling techniques, and experimental design, while simultaneously integrating modern tools like Python, R, SQL, Machine Learning, and Tableau,” said Prof Suresh Malik, head, department of statistics, MDU.
He said key features of the course include multiple entry and exit options, practical exposure through field surveys, internships, capstone projects, and an optional honours with research track in the final year.
“Statistics has now become the backbone of decision-making across almost every field including economics, public health, marketing, finance, sports, climate science, education, and more. Choosing statistics after Class XII opens a world of opportunities, particularly when integrated with data science — a fast-growing interdisciplinary domain that merges statistical reasoning with computing and domain expertise,” Prof Malik pointed out.
He said that eligibility requires XII with mathematics and a minimum of 50 per cent aggregate marks (47.5 per cent for SC/ST and differently abled candidates of Haryana). The admission is through an entrance test, and only 60 seats are available.
