Congress president should be mass leader, not rubber stamp: Minister
Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vikramaditya Singh today said that the president of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) should not be a rubber stamp but a strong mass leader. “It is the prerogative of the Congress high command to name the HPCC president. However, the person chosen for this responsibility should be a mass leader, having personal influence in at least two or three districts. It will be detrimental to the interests of the party if a rubber stamp is given the responsibility,” he added.
Incidentally, his mother Pratibha Singh has completed her term as HPCC president and there’s no clarity yet whether she will be given another term.
Vikramaditya reiterated that whether to retain Pratibha or appoint a new HPCC president was the prerogative of the party high command. He said that Pratibha had never demanded the post of HPCC president.
“She was made the HPCC president after she won the Mandi parliamentary seat for the party under adverse circumstances. Thereafter, the then HPCC president, Leader of the Opposition Mukesh Agnihotri and then campaign committee chairman Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu contributed to bringing the Congress to power,” he added.
The minister said that appointing and empowering a strong mass leader would help the party in the long run.
