In fact, tourism brings in the most money for the country. Tourism is the top revenue-generating sector for Turkey and plays a major role in strengthening its economy.

How tourism became the backbone of Turkey’s economy

Thanks to its rich geography and cultural heritage, Turkey has become one of the world’s most popular travel destinations. Cities like Istanbul, and places like Cappadocia, Antalya, Pamukkale, and Ephesus attract millions of tourists every year with their historical sites and natural beauty.

In 2023, Turkey welcomed over 50 million international visitors, earning more than USD 46 billion from tourism. These numbers place Turkey among the top tourist destinations worldwide. After the COVID-19 pandemic, the country quickly revived its tourism sector and set new standards for the industry.

Government support boosted tourism growth

The Turkish government has taken several steps to promote tourism. Visa processes have been made simpler, and facilities like visa-on-arrival are now available. The government has also invested heavily in building and improving hotels and tourist spots.

Turkey’s national airline, Turkish Airlines, is one of the biggest in the world in terms of destinations, offering convenient travel options for visitors. In addition to leisure tourism, Turkey has also invested in medical tourism. With high-quality healthcare services at affordable prices, the country has become a popular choice for people seeking medical treatment abroad.

Defense exports vs. tourism revenue

While Turkey increased its defense exports to USD 4.4 billion in 2023, this figure still falls far short when compared to its tourism earnings. In fact, defense exports make up only about 2–3 per centof Turkey’s total export income. On the other hand, tourism contributes nearly 12 per cent to the country’s GDP and provides jobs to millions of people.

Despite the strength of Turkey’s tourism sector, it faces several challenges. Political instability, disputes with neighboring countries, and regional security concerns can impact the flow of tourists. Even so, the Turkish government continues to take steps to support and grow the tourism industry.
