Maharashtra reports 2 Covid-19 linked deaths since January, 52 under treatment

Maharashtra health department confirmed that the state reported two Covid-19 related deaths since January this year.

The health department stated that both the fatalities were reported from Mumbai and the deceased were patients with comorbidities. Patients with comorbidities have the simultaneous presence of two or more medical conditions.

As per the state government, one of the deceased had nephrotic syndrome with hypocalcemia seizure, while the other was a cancer patient.

According to PTI, the government reported that a total of 6,066 swab samples have been examined for coronavirus since January, of which 106 tested positive for the infectious disease. Of these, 101 were from Mumbai and the remaining were from Pune, Thane, and Kolhapur.

The health department also informed that 52 patients are currently undergoing treatment for mild Covid-19 symptoms, while 16 are going through treatment at hospitals.

Countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Thailand reported a fresh wave of Covid-19 cases and experts believe the JN. 1 variant is responsible for the surge. JN.1 was first detected in September 2023 in the United States. It was classified as a Variant of Interest (VOI) in December 2023 by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Health experts have advised people to take necessary precautions against getting infected by wearing masks, getting vaccinated, maintaining regular hygiene and consulting a health practitioner when symptoms show up.
