Waqf not an essential part of Islam, like charity in other religions: Centre to Supreme Court
The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that while waqf is an Islamic concept, it is not an essential or mandatory part of the religion. Appearing on behalf of the government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta made this submission during the ongoing hearing on petitions challenging the validity and functioning of waqf laws. “Waqf is an Islamic concept but not an essential part of Islam,” Mehta told the bench. “Charity is a feature of all religions. Even Christians may follow it. In Hinduism, there is a structured system of donations. The Sikh community too, follows similar practices,” he added.
