Real Madrid transfers: Perez to let Xabi Alonso sign Florian Wirtz after Club World Cup if...

For Real Madrid, signing Florian Wirtz is not a need but a want, the higher-ups at the Santiago Bernabeu reportedly believe.

Florentino Perez-led board is convinced that Xabi Alonso needs new signings to enhance the team's performance next season and is in the process of making multiple signings including Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Los Blancos are also heavily linked to Benfica's left-back Alvaro Carreras and Arsenal centre-back William Saliba. Alexis Mac Allister, Nico Williams and Angelo Stiller are all being tracked by Real, reports claimed. However, Perez and Co. are convinced that Florian Wirtz shouldn't be a priority for the club as things stand.

Xabi Alonso fully trusts the German attacking midfielder, who was being closely monitored by Manchester City until recently. However, the English cash cow backed out reportedly due to disagreements over the Leverkusen star's demands. Bayern Munich is the only club actively tracking him at the moment and is awaiting the player's nod with a contract ready.

Under Alonso, Wirtz became the most lethal attacking midfielder in Europe and was crucial in the club's league and cup wins last season. Alonso sees him as an asset who could make his life easier in the Spanish capital where Hansi Flick's Barcelona awaits with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Pedri.

The way Perez sees it, a Toni Kroos-like deep-lying playmaker should be the priority for Real Madrid along with defensive reinforcements. With likes of Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham already in their ranks, spending big on Wirtz is an extravaganza, he thinks. However, it is not the end of the road yet.

According to Spanish broadcaster Ramon Alvarez de Mon, decision-makers at Real Madrid will take the final call on Wirtz depending on the outcome of the Club World Cup. If Xabi Alonso manages to bring the cup home, it is likely to be decided that Wirtz's services are not needed in Madrid. But, if the team fails to win the trophy, the 22-year-old has a serious chance of joining European powerhouses.

In case of an unsuccessful Club World Cup campaign, Real Madrid will assess if it was offensive depletion that cost them the games. If satisfied, signing Wirtz will be discussed again, Spanish media reports said quoting Ramon. He will not be a panic buy and the asking price will also be crucial in the outcome of the talks, it added.

Wirtz's strong bond with Alonso and the aforementioned situation could be the reason why, as reported by a prominent German sports magazine, he is unlikely to make up his mind for at least ten more days. However, the tournament starts only on June 15 with the final scheduled for July 14.
