Kochi Man's Hair Transplant Goes Wrong, Clinic Owner Booked After Patient Suffers Bacterial Infection

A case has been filed by Ernakulam South police against the proprietor of a private hair and skin clinic in Panampilly Nagar, along with two other individuals, following serious allegations from a patient who developed critical complications after a hair transplant.

Sanil, a resident of Kochi, underwent the cosmetic procedure in February this year, expecting a routine recovery. However, the aftermath proved catastrophic. Within days, he began experiencing severe pain and signs of infection, ultimately requiring nearly ten surgical interventions.

Hair Transplant Surgery Goes Wrong

According to Sanil's statement to the police, the discomfort began just days after the surgery concluded on February 27. By March 1, the pain had intensified, and his attempts to contact the doctor—identified as Dr Sharath Kumar Bathini, the clinic’s Managing Director and Assistant Hair Transplant Surgeon—were unsuccessful, reported Deccan Herald.

On March 3, Sanil noticed yellowish lesions on his scalp that began to discharge pus. Despite these alarming symptoms, clinic staff allegedly downplayed his concerns, urging him to return rather than seek outside medical attention.

The situation escalated on March 10, when Sanil visited Lourdes Hospital, reported South First. There, he was referred to a plastic surgeon who confirmed a severe bacterial infection, as per a report on The Hindu. The diagnosis led to multiple surgeries and extensive treatment, placing immense physical, emotional, and financial strain on Sanil and his family.

Police investigations have since revealed that the clinic in question is now shut down, and the accused doctor are reportedly untraceable. Authorities are examining whether the clinic was operating with valid medical licenses and if the personnel involved were qualified to carry out such procedures.

The case has raised serious questions about the regulation and oversight of cosmetic treatment centers in Kerala with public health advocates calling for stricter enforcement and accountability in the sector.
