9-Year-Old Girl Among 3 Dead, At Least 11 Injured As Fierce Dust Storm Batters Delhi

Three people, including a nine-year-old girl, lost their lives during the massive dust storm and heavy rains that lashed Delhi on Wednesday evening, officials said on Thursday.

Two others who died included a 22-year-old man and a differently-abled individual. Additionally, at least 11 people sustained injuries during the severe storm.

The nine-year-old, identified as Sahana alias Chandni, lost her life after an iron window panel from the third floor of a building fell on her. “She was immediately rushed to Civil Lines Trauma Centre, where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment,” a senior police officer said, news agency PTI reported.

Following the incident, the site was inspected and documented by the crime team, and later, a case was filed against the owner of the house. “Further investigation is underway to ascertain accountability and verify if any negligence in maintenance led to the incident,” the officer added.

In south-east Delhi’s Nizamuddin area, at around 7.50 pm, a high-beam electricity pole collapsed during the thunderstorm near the Lodhi Road flyover and fell onto the middle of the road, hitting the differently-abled man who was passing by on a tricycle.

"He was rushed to the Safdarjung Hospital in an ambulance but was declared dead," the police said, and added that the identity of the man is still being ascertained.

In a separate incident, 22-year-old Azhar died after a tree fell on him and two motorcycles in north-east Delhi's Gokulpuri area at around 8.15 pm amid a massive dust storm.

At Least Six Injured

Meanwhile, at least six people were allegedly injured following the collapse of a portion of the grill of an old foot overbridge near Mukherjee Nagar. In addition, more injuries were reported from the Kashmere Gate and Mangolpuri areas.

The deaths and injuries unfolded amid the sudden change in extreme weather in Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening. Following a sweltering afternoon, a sudden evening dust storm accompanied by rain swept through the city, causing widespread disruption.

Traffic was thrown into chaos across major routes, including Delhi-Noida, Delhi-Ghaziabad, and Delhi-Gurugram, while numerous trees were uprooted due to the strong winds.
