J&K: Soldier injured in Kishtwar encounter dies; gunfight still on

A soldier who was injured in the ongoing gunfight between terrorists and security forces in the Singhpora area of Chatroo, located in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, has succumbed.

 

The Indian Army’s White Knight Corps confirmed the development in a post on X, said that the soldier, who had sustained critical injuries earlier in the day, succumbed despite receiving prompt medical attention.

 

“A fierce exchange of fire is currently underway. One of our brave soldiers, who was seriously wounded in the encounter, has unfortunately passed away despite all medical efforts,” the Corps said in the post.

 

Two militants have also been killed in the gunfight.

 

The encounter began in the morning when a joint team of the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a cordon and search operation in the area, following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists.

 

The operation was launched by troops from 2 Para Special Forces, the Army’s 11 Rashtriya Rifles, 7th Assam Rifles, and the Special Operations Group (SOG) Kishtwar.

 

The encounter broke out days after six terrorists were killed in two separate encounters in Shopian and Tral in Pulwama.

 

Security forces have intensified the anti-terror operations in the valley after the Pahalgam attack in which 26 civilians, mostly tourists, were killed.

 

The police have also raised vigil against anti-national elements. Last week, 23 people from different parts of Kashmir were arrested for activities in inimical to national security.
