Gangster held after exchange of fire with cops

The police arrested a wanted criminal following an encounter near Kalanaur. The police said Jaspal Singh Jassa of Batala was wanted in several cases.

He was signalled to stop at a checkpost, but he tried to escape. The police fired a shot which hit him in the leg, said an officer. He was admitted to the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital.

Jaspal Singh engaged SHO, Kalanaur, Sahil Pathania, in the firing. Police said the officer had a narrow escape after Jaspal started firing at him.

Senior police officers, including SSP Aditya, reached the spot and started investigations. The SSP said a case of attempt to murder has been registered against Jaspal Singh. — TNS
