IndiGo To Restore 80 Grounded Aircraft By 2026; Minor Airfare Relief Likely
IndiGo is expected to return the majority of its grounded aircraft to active service by early 2026, significantly expanding its fleet by nearly 80 planes in the financial year 2025–26 (FY26), according to a report by The Economic Times. This marks a sharp increase from the airline’s typical annual fleet growth of around 40 aircraft.
Most Grounded Jets Returning To Skies
Of the approximately 40 IndiGo planes currently grounded, around 30 are set to rejoin operations, thanks to improved engine availability from Pratt & Whitney (PW) and extended engine life between overhauls. The remaining 10 aircraft will be returned to lessors as lease agreements expire, as per the report.
The airline’s operational challenges were further complicated by a rare defect identified by Pratt & Whitney in the powder metal used in A320neo engines.
Fare Relief Expected
With an active fleet currently at 434 aircraft, the planned additions could ease pressure on airfares, which have remained high amid supply constraints. However, analysts note that some of the extra capacity will be used for expanding international routes, which may limit the impact on domestic fares.
IndiGo’s recent financial performance has been hit hard by grounding issues related to PW’s geared turbofan engines. More than 40 aircraft have been out of service due to these problems, compounded by high aviation turbine fuel costs. As a result, parent company InterGlobe Aviation Ltd posted a consolidated loss of Rs 987 crore in Q2 FY25, a sharp reversal from the Rs 189 crore profit recorded in the same quarter of FY24.
Strong Q4
Despite the setbacks, IndiGo delivered a record consolidated net profit of Rs 3,068 crore in Q4, marking a 61.9 per cent year-on-year increase. Key drivers included strong travel demand during the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, an extended wedding season, fewer grounded aircraft, and better cost controls. For the full FY25, however, profit declined by 11.2 per cent year-on-year to Rs 7,258 crore.
