This neighbour of India is facing severe salt crisis, Modi govt extends support by…, price of one of of salt is…, the country is…
Sri Lanka, the pear-shaped island surrounded by the Indian Ocean, is currently grappling with a new crisis. Well, Sri Lanka is facing a severe shortage of salt. Due to heavy rainfall, salt production has come to a halt, and large quantities of already produced salt have been washed away. As a result, the country is unable to produce even the minimum required amount of salt, leaving people struggling for this essential commodity. The scarcity has led to a sharp rise in prices, with salt now costing three to four times more than usual.
Due to the ongoing crisis and severe shortage, salt in Sri Lanka is reportedly being sold at an inflated price of Rs 125 to Rs 145 per kilogram. The country is managing to produce only about 23% of its actual salt requirement. According to several media reports, India has stepped in to support its neighbour by sending a shipment of 3,050 metric tonnes of salt.
However, due to continuous heavy rains, the delivery has been delayed. Out of the total shipment, 2,800 metric tonnes were sent by India’s National Salt Company, while the remaining 250 metric tonnes came from private sector companies, several media reported.
The Salt Producers’ Association has stated that delays by the government in importing 30,000 metric tonnes of non-iodized salt have worsened the situation. Sri Lankans have shared photos of empty store shelves on social media, while many have expressed their frustration over having to search extensively just to find salt.
