DGP rallies students against drug abuse

Under the Punjab Government’s campaign “Yudh Nashiya Virudh”, Director General of Police (Special) Shashi Prabha Dwivedi interacted with students at Bhavans SL Public School today. The objective of the session was to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse and to inspire a collective public movement against this widespread menace.

Addressing the students, DGP Dwivedi emphasised that the Punjab Police has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against drug traffickers. She added that a significant number of individuals involved in the illegal drug trade have been arrested, with their assets frozen in accordance with legal procedures. She further mentioned that several properties belonging to drug peddlers have been demolished by the police along with other authorities concerned.

She said that apart from taking strict action against offenders, the police are also conducting awareness programmes in educational institutions, including schools and colleges, and engaging directly with students. She highlighted the critical role of youth in shaping the nation’s future and urged them to motivate acquaintances who may have fallen into the trap of drug addiction to seek help. The police help support them, she assured.

“We have sent over 300 such victims to drug addiction and rehabilitation centres in the past two months,” she said. She also appealed to the students to play an active role in eradicating drug menace from Punjab.

During the event, students also took a pledge to stay away from drugs and to educate others about the harmful effects of drug abuse.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said people can report drug-related activities in their areas by calling the police helpline at 112 or the police control room at 77101-04818, assuring that all reports would be kept confidential.

He added that since the campaign’s launch, city police have arrested 714 drug peddlers in the last 83 days, registered 332 FIRs, seized 64 kg heroin, 3 kg of opium and Rs 1.87 crore in drug money and impounded 36 vehicles.
