International airport runway will be temporarily closed for 90 days, check details before traveling

Runway 28/10 at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will be temporarily closed for 90 days from June 15, 2025. During this period, Instrument Landing System (ILS) will be installed there, which will upgrade the runway to CAT III B level. This will allow aircraft to land easily and safely even in fog or low visibility weather.

One runway of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) – 28/10 – will be temporarily closed for 90 days from June 15, 2025. During this time, necessary improvements will be made on this runway so that airplanes can land better in fog or low visibility. Actually, the Instrument Landing System (ILS) technology used on this runway is being upgraded to CAT III B level. According to TOI, this technology allows planes to land safely even in just 50 meters visibility, which becomes very important especially in Delhi’s winters because the fog is very dense during that time. Let us tell you, on which runway the work will be done.

Runway 28/10 is very important

IGIA has a total of four runways, and runway 28/10 is one of the important runways, which handles more than 1,400 aircraft daily. Therefore, this decision has been taken to increase its capacity and safety.

This work was first started in April 2025, but it had to be stopped in just four weeks, because with three runways, this airport could not handle the load of flights and many flights started getting delayed and cancelled. Now this work will start again from June, during this time there is no problem of fog in summer, so there will be less impact on operations.

Why is the work starting during this time

Keeping in mind the last time, this time the officials have rescheduled the time for runway repairs – now this work will be done by mid-June. Air travel is less during this time, so passengers will face less trouble. This time the airlines have been clearly told that they should decide in advance which flights are to be cancelled, so that passengers have to face minimum trouble. This time the effort is that everything should be done as per the plan – and everyone should work together.

The airport will be technically strong

Runway 28/10 will be upgraded to meet CAT III B standards. This will include the installation of a new Instrument Landing System (ILS) on the runway, and the runway lights will be extended from 650 metres to 900 metres. This will make the airport technically more robust – and especially during bad weather (like fog in Delhi’s winter), flights will be able to run on time.

Advisory for passengers

Passengers who wish to travel via Delhi during the shutdown are advised to check with their airline for changes in advance. Book tickets in advance and stay updated with flight information to avoid travel delays.
