India Azerbaijan trade: Turkey and Azerbaijan, along with China, were among the few nations that supported Pakistan during the recent India-Pakistan conflict, due to which New Delhi has taken several steps to downgrade diplomatic and trade ties with both these countries. According to geopolitical experts, India may cut trade ties with Azerbaijan in wake of the latter’s support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.

Crude oil is the most important item which India imports from Azerbaijan, accounting for 98 percent of Baku’s total exports to India. Notably, India is the third largest buyer of Azerbaijani crude oil, and a boycott of this key export could have a significant impact on Azerbaijan’s economy.

India also imports animal feed, organic chemicals, essential oils and perfumes, raw hides and leather from Azerbaijan, and the prices of these items are likely to go up if the trade relations between the two countries are affected due to ongoing tensions.

What does India export to Azerbaijan?

Indian exports to Azerbaijan include essentials like tobacco, tobacco products, tea, coffee, cereals, chemicals, plastics, rubber, paper and paperboard, and ceramics. The prices of these items will likely surge in Azerbaijan if trade ties are cut.

Additionally, Turkey and Azerbaijan have emerged as favorite vacation destinations for Indian tourists in recent years, but a major portion of recent bookings have been cancelled in wake of the current tensions, dealing a severe blow to the tourism industries of these countries.

India to send arms consignment to Armenia

Meanwhile, India is reportedly preparing to send a $720 million arms consignment to Armenia, Azerbaijan’s rival. According to media reports, Armenia has signed a deal to acquire 15 units of India’s indigenously developed Akash-1S air defense system.

Turkey and Azerbaijan came out in open support of Pakistan during the recent conflict with India, with Ankara supplying military drones to the Pakistan armed forces which were used to attack military and residential structures in India.
