Yash Chopra’s Darr catapulted Shah Rukh Khan to a newfound fame. Released in 1993, the film was a blockbuster success, establishing King Khan’s versatility as an actor. However, not many know that SRK’s character was initially offered to 3 superstars. It was only after they rejected that role and it went to him.
Makers of Darr suffered casting problems initially. Aamir Khan was approached to play the role of obsessive stalker, Rahul. Reportedly, he backed out due to creative differences. In an event when asked about the superhit film, Mr Perfectionist said, “I was going to do Darr, but then I opted out of it for other reasons. It is very well made. Shah Rukh Khan was perfectly suited for the role. The soul Yash ji was trying to put in the film through me…If I was doing it, it would have gone wrong. I don’t regret not doing it.”
Later, Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan were reportedly offered the film, but they later rejected it. Eventually, the role went to Shah Rukh Khan’s kitty, garnering him profound success in an antagonist role for the first time.
According to reports, Rishi Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty were initially approached for the role of Sunil, which was portrayed by Sunny Deol in the film. However, they all declined it due to unknown reasons. Moreover, Juhi Chawla, who starred as a lead actress in Darr, portrayed the role of Kiran. Before her final casting, several actresses were approached, including Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Divya Bharti and Aishwarya Rai, but certainly it didn’t work out and Juhi ultimately played the part.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Darr was the year’s highest-grossing Indian film, earning Rs 21.3 crore at the box office. Moreover, it also earned the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment at the 41st National Awards.
