Thalassemia awareness event held at SGRD University

The Sri Guru Ram Dass (SGRD) Thalassemia Welfare Society and Amritsar Academy of Pediatrics organised an event to commemorate World Thalassemia Day. The event brought together participants, including students, family members of patients, and blood donors, who had previously contributed over 100 units of blood.

The programme featured engaging activities such as talent shows, role plays, poster making and storytelling, designed to uplift the spirits of children affected by thalassemia. Dr Gursharan Singh Narang, General Secretary of SGRD Thalassemia Welfare Society, highlighted that approximately 180 children from Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Gurdaspur districts are associated with the organisation, requiring regular blood transfusions due to their inability to produce blood from birth.

Notable attendees, including Ajit Singh, former Principal, and renowned Punjabi singer and writer Bir Singh, emphasised the importance of support from compassionate organisations and individuals in alleviating the struggles of children battling thalassemia. They appealed to people to contribute by donating blood or offering financial support and motivating others to participate in these efforts.

The event was attended by Dr Manjit Singh Uppal, Vice-Chancellor of SGRD University and other dignitaries from the medical field. Dean Dr AP Singh said the SGRD Thalassemia Welfare Society provides free treatment facilities, including expert care, essential medications and blood management services, to children affected by thalassemia, ensuring that families do not encounter financial burdens during treatment.
