Seventeen-year-old Sameer Kohli, son of a driver, who clinched a gold medal in gymnastics at the Khelo India Youth Games held in New Delhi on May 14, was recently honoured by the sports school staff and also met Mayor Vaneet Dhir.

He had recently overcome a recent fracture near his ankle. Sameer’s father Ramesh Kohli, while talking to The Tribune, shared that he was elated on his son’s achievement. He also shared an anecdote where last year when his son couldn’t get any position in Khelo India.

“He told me that even though he had not got any position, he was sure that he would be getting a gold next year. I was surprised to listen to him. I asked him how he was going to do that? So, he replied that he had observed every player and was ready to work really hard on his weaknesses and he was true. He worked really hard and won a gold medal,” the father said.

Sameer now aims to represent the country in international tournaments and championships and preparations are already underway.

His journey in gymnastics began when he was around seven-year old, inspired by a senior at his school. “He really played a major role in my life. I got inspired just by watching him perform. That was when I started training under Luv sir,” Sameer told The Tribune while returning from New Delhi.
